Who are We?

Little Britain is a protestant church. We are part of the United Church of Canada. We have a small but active congregation that meets Sundays at 10:00 a.m. for worship.

Little Britain provides opportunities for adult study and care; pastoral visitation; pastoral listening and spiritual support. We're always looking at more programming and dreaming up new ways of being together, in God's world. All are welcome!

The church may be booked for weddings, funerals, celebrations and holds approximately 100 folks comfortably. Our hall is available for rental use as well. Little Britain is a comfortable place to learn and seek.

Visitors and New Members

Everyone is welcome at Little Britain United Church! Services start at 10:00 a.m. Sunday mornings. Sit where you like. We use the United Church hymn book called "Voices United".

How We Worship

Regular Services

Regular services follow the same general format: Service starts with a prayer and a hymn, then scripture reading, the Minister's time with the children (following which the children go to the hall for Sunday School), a sermon, offering, prayers of the people, and a benediction. Hymns are interspersed throughout the service.

Child-friendly Inter-generational Services

Occasionally, throughout the year, children will remain in church. These services are planned with children in mind. We are a child-friendly group-- if your child is restless or noisy, don't worry. You can stay in church, where there is a comfortable chair and some toys in the back, or go outside or over to the hall. There is usually someone supervising the nursery if you want to leave your little one(s) at the hall.

Summer Services

Summer is a quiet time at Little Britain, as folks are routinely away on weekends on vacation or at the cottage. Our minister usually has holidays at this time too. Last summer, for July we had a series of abbreviated services planned by Rev. Ginny and led by various volunteers from the congregation. August sees the return of Rev. Ginny with continued abbreviated services until September, when things return to full-swing.

Education

Sunday School

Throughout the school year we have regular Sunday School classes for children. At 10:00 a.m. children attend church with their families/friends to participate in the church service before moving to the hall for Sunday School.

Our hall features two individual classrooms, a nursery, and a large common area. Sunday School is taught by many volunteers from our congregation. Every February the children host a special pancake breakfast in preparation for Lent. We celebrate the end of the Sunday School year in June with a potluck Church Picnic.

Youth Group

The Youth Group is for those who have had their 12th birthday but not their 20th. There is no group at this time.

In the past the group met regularly throughout the school year. They hosted a popular monthly community dance for kids in Grades 3-6. They had sleep overs, pizza parties and many other fun activities at the church, as they explore the role of spirituality and the church. We also offer confirmation classes when needed.

Adult Education

Little Britain has offered a variety of adult education opportunities, from weekly meetings exploring prayer to movie/discussion sessions, to one-time discussions on various topics, to an exploration of the best selling novel "The Da Vinci Code". This spring we offered a Lenten Study group for four weeks before Easter. We are always open to suggestions/ideas for new programs.

What to Expect

Offering

Offerings are donations given by church-goers to help pay for the costs of running the church. They are collected during every service. Offering plates are passed around later in the service. Giving a donation is your choice and can be any amount that is comfortable for you.

To receive a tax receipt, numbered envelopes are assigned to you for the year. Or you can sign up for PAR (pre-authorized remittance), which allows us to automatically withdraw your donation from your bank account every month.

Click here to download a PAR brochure/application as a PDF (18 KB).
(Adobe Reader is required.)

Communion

All are welcome to take Communion in the United Church, including visitors, non-members, and children. We use bread and grape juice.

Music

Music is important to the folks at Little Britain United Church. During worship, we've enjoyed the music of the Bluegrass Jammers, the Gentle Folk, and several talented singers.

Choir: We have no regular choir at this time. We have a group that sings on special occasions. We would love to have a full-time choir, we just need to find enough people who are interested in singing!

Organist: We currently have two organists who take turns playing, according to their availability: Sandra Richardson and Carol Anderson.

Mission Statement

Photo of stained glass windowStained glass window  donated in 1930 by  James Pittis in memory  of his parents.

We are a congregation in a heritage church, energized by Christ to seek justice, resist evil, to love and care for others. Our church is organized to enable us to faithfully use the variety of gifts God gives to build up the body of Christ, in our congregation and beyond.

To fulfill these commitments, we will meet together to worship, study, pray, break bread at the Lord's table, and to celebrate God's presence in times of joy and sorrow. We will support one another in our quest to become the people that God intends us to be. we will invite young people and others to join us as we encourage one another to explore and grow in faith, to respect God's creation, and to know ourselves and all others as beloved children of God. With God's help, we will endeavour to uphold the best traditions of this faith community.
